To know more about what really works in the classroom, ask an expert, ask a teacher. Teachers are continually testing and refining their own ideas, putting educational research into practice, and engaging students in meaningful learning that has the potential to shape our community in powerful ways. At the ISP, it is our privilege to elevate educators as experts, to support their critical work, and celebrate what we are learning together.
Igniting early curiosity about complex science concepts
"For growing science and recruiting more people into science, high school students are an ideal audience,” says Nathaniel Huebsch, associate professor of biomedical engineering at WashU's McKelvey School of Engineering. Over the summer, he worked with Lafayette HS teacher Sarah Scerba, who knows all about communicating complex science concepts to high school students.
That's how often teachers generate knowledge about what works in education. To learn more about how middle school math teacher Monica Amos builds upon this deep, practice-based knowledge year after year as she supports students and continues to be inspired by what they can do, listen to this ISP Audio Conversation. #Inspiring
When teachers have opportunities to actively participate in and “try on” ambitious science teaching strategies, they are more confident and feel more prepared to engage students in meaningful, three-dimensional science learning. This is one finding shared by ISP Instructional Specialists Heather Milo and Alex Gerber, co-authors of “Learning to Be an Ambitious Science Teacher,” an article published in the Sept/Oct 2024 issue of Science and Children.
