Partnership is more than just a word at ISP. It’s a practice. Our critical work creating equitable learning environments is most impactful when we celebrate the expertise and deep commitment to students demonstrated by teachers, administrators and leaders from schools and districts throughout the St. Louis region. These professionals are our partners. We are thankful to come alongside them as we move toward lasting change – together.
Engaging science learning starts with intention and trusted partners
No stranger to kindergarteners or the classroom, teacher Brittany Stephens was on the lookout for an old-fashioned rotary phone last summer. She was confident that having the clunky relic on hand would help her young students grasp the concepts of then and now. “Being encouraged to think creatively and find the tools I need to bring lessons to life for my students is refreshing,” says Stephens, among teachers from two Saint Louis Public Schools participating in the Transformational Leadership Initiative (TLI), a multi-year effort supporting educators as they establish and refine place-based learning. ISP Associate Director Rachel Ruggirello and Briana Trager, former math coach with the Mehlville School District, co-authored a chapter in a book published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). The chapter is based on work done in Mehlville through the STEMpact STEM District Immersion (DI). Read more here.
Pilot boosts inquiry-based instruction for SLPS teachers and students
Outcomes of a two-year STEM learning pilot ISP completed in partnership with St. Louis Public Schools and The Little Bit Foundation are encouraging.
Made possible with generous support of the Bayer Fund, the pilot reached 194 educators and 2,000+ students. This unique collaboration leveraged the expertise of district administrators, as well as third, fourth and fifth grade teachers from 18 schools who co-developed activities to meet the complex and ever-evolving needs of their specific learning communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ready for takeoff! Teachers participating in STEMpact's STEM Teacher Quality (TQ) meet regularly throughout the school year to deepen their learning at some of our region's STEM-rich locations, including the Challenger Learning Center.
Bold thinking, bold leading. Leaders participating in the SLPS Principal Redesign Fellowship had an opportunity to share the inspiring visions for their schools during a year-end celebration event held in December.
